The State of Reading in Indiana
Indiana’s 4th-grade reading scores on the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) show promising growth, with 2024 scores significantly higher than the national average. While this progress reflects the state’s commitment to literacy, there is still work to be done to ensure all students reach their full potential. As one of the most effective literacy interventions for struggling readers, high-dosage tutoring can play a key role in sustaining and accelerating this momentum.
To that end, the Indiana Department of Education (IDOE) and Secretary of Education, Dr. Katie Jenner, have established educational initiatives, including a statewide tutoring grant program for eligible families, to ensure 95% of 3rd-grade students in Indiana can read by 2027. Those initiatives involve
- Securing a literacy investment upwards of $170 million to support literacy initiatives that would address the two-thirds of Indiana fourth-graders scoring below proficient in reading
- Establishing the Indiana Learns tutoring grant program, which has provided nearly 180,000 hours of tutoring to an enrollment of over 20,000 students

Along with the Indy Summer Learning Labs program, the Indiana Learns program is a state program that could be funded in the upcoming budget.
IDOE and Secretary of Education Katie Jenner have indicated that they intend to evaluate the academic impact of Indiana Learns ahead of any budgetary asks to the General Assembly and make a case for these programs based on student growth data.

Why OnYourMark for High-Dosage Tutoring in Indiana?
Because learning to read is at the heart of education, but only one-third of students in the U.S. read at grade level. Being able to read on grade level by third grade is a strong predictor of future student success. Research proves a link between failure to reach this milestone and higher rates of high school dropout, severely limiting opportunities for success.
OnYourMark Education exists to close the literacy gap for students by building foundational literacy skills to help all students become strong readers. We partner with schools to strengthen their existing literacy instruction for Tier 2 and Tier 3 students by providing high-dosage live virtual literacy tutoring to students during the school day. Our skilled tutors deliver personalized and engaging Science of Reading-based curriculum while building relationships that help developing readers succeed.

High-Dosage Tutoring in Action at The PATH School
When our team visited The PATH School in Indianapolis this spring, we saw firsthand how virtual tutoring transforms early literacy learning. Here's what stood out:
"During our visit, we had the opportunity to observe literacy tutoring in both kindergarten and first-grade classrooms. It was inspiring to witness the strong, trusting relationships students have developed with their tutors over the course of the school year. The level of focus and engagement from the students was remarkable—they were so immersed in their learning that they barely noticed the ten adults observing in the room.”
—Vince Gay, Managing Director of New Partner Development | OnYourMark
“School leadership specifically commended our program's exceptional communication and partnership approach. They particularly valued our consistent check-in meetings and data-driven discussions about student growth outcomes, noting how these practices have created a meaningful and effective educational collaboration. “
—Jamie Thomas, Senior Director of Program | OnYourMark

"OnYourMark is very strategic about activities to build relationships. And, it was so quick too! I was just amazed at how quickly the kids really connected to the tutors. You might think that it is harder to connect virtually, but for OnYourMark, it's not. They're just so mindful of the engagement and the relationships with students."

"We had so many kids moving up different levels because now they’re able to sound out the words, they’re able to read the words… Again and that's why we’re using OnYourMark with our K-2 students: because of the quick turnarounds and the quick wins that you see.”
